So, this is my sighting and encounter story from back in the Summer of 2012 while camping with my puppy in northern California. I am not going to specify where this exactly happened because it’s a cool spot and it should be preserved.
Before this event, and even months after my “sighting,” I honestly tried to forget about it. I’m no wimp in the slightest, but this was by far the most terrifying, experience I have had to deal with mentally. I also want to say, that I don’t talk about this with anyone, and as I do here, it makes me nervous to think about what happened.
Remote (enough) Camping.
You can call me “Mack,” and what I’m about to tell you is all true, in fact, if I don’t specifically remember something, I will leave it out, like I said, this really happened to me.
These are the facts as I know them and understood them at the time, I really thought I was in grave danger, and I think whatever it was, it literally wanted my dog, or me, or both of us.
I don’t care what anybody thinks, this happened, and there are monsters in the woods of the Pacific Northwest!
So I was about 22 years old, still in college and had a girlfriend when this happened. My grandfather, a wise hunter, taught me how to shoot guns, survive in the woods, and other good stuff.
I kept the tradition of going out to the remote woods around the PacWest to get away from modern society and gather my thoughts, and, of course, simply live off the land and enjoy it.
There is nothing like the invigoration that solitude and creation can give you.
However, my grandpa and people who raised me taught me to never go in the forest alone, but if you do, it’s a necessity to bring a weapon every time, and know how to use it properly.
My main spot to go solo camping with my dog was around the Redding, California or, Shasta area, but this time I decided to go exploring near the northern coast of NorCal, just south of the Redwoods.
I am not going to specify the location at all, but somewhere between Cresent City and Orick along Highway 101 in California, I had found a good road and area to explore.
I was able to take my car pretty deep into the woods, at least far enough that I was confident there wasn’t a person around who could hear me, something I would enjoy as part of my meditation, knowing that if I twisted an ankle nobody is coming for days, if at all.
The point was to be 100% self-reliant, and I accomplished this.
I must tell you a couple things before I continue, however.
So, this particular trip I brought my female pit bull who was about a year old, and I wasn’t going to go because she was in heat but, I went anyway.
Now, bears and other animals can not only smell but are attracted to a female in heat so, suffice it to say, I was very cautious and kept a firearm on myself at all times, and well within the laws of this crazy state.
Also, I was here to retreat. And, while the area I was in was rather remote, it was and is a great spot for growing pot, and there are some bad stories about people finding pot up here and disappearing. I want to lay these out because I was already watching out for Bears and Hillbilly Pot Growers when I got there.
I got to this particular site around 3pm, and I was excited about finding this new, secluded spot.
I Liked that it was secluded and hidden, yet there was a great view of some hills, and in the distant, there was a view of the ocean maybe 10 miles away.
After some rugged driving, I found my spot, which I guess was weird looking back now because there was what looked like an old camp site, empty but, also located in a slightly weird place nearby.
It was just an empty clearing of trees off the side of the tiny off-road, well, kinda road I was on. Also, you should know I drove a Toyota Corolla here, and on the way in almost got stuck multiple times.
I already knew getting out would be crazy and I had to somehow turn my car around first.
I thought it was great though, and I was tired, so, after getting situated with my camp, I started cooking dinner immediately.
Noises of nature?
Now, the unfamiliar noises and other things that I heard first caught my attention while I was cooking dinner. I remember thinking to myself, “What animal makes that noise?”
But, I didn’t really care, to be honest, I was enjoying the freedom, and a little tired from the trip. I went to sleep early maybe an hour after it got dark, and it wasn’t even 30 minutes or so after that my “sighting” began.
I was laying in my sleeping bag with my pitbull puppy next to me, my 12 gauge with bear rounds, and a 9mm handgun next to me as well. I was not even asleep when from far away I heard something big literally crashing through the forest.
My first thought was that is was a bear and it was barreling through the forest uphill right at my camp!
I figured I had a large animal coming because it had most likely smelled my dog. I also knew it was large because of the noise of branches being broken as it kept coming. I was sure it had to be a large bear, elk, or other known predator or large animal out here.
I mean seriously, it was all I could figure it to be after all the noise it was making.
So, the crashing through the woods continued, until it just barely passed my camp, and tent, then it very quickly stopped.
When it stopped, which was only like 30-40 feet or less from me, I got a sense it was checking me out, yet I was still thinking it was some kind of known animal.
Among the commotion that was happening, I could hear it was bipedal as it came smashing through the forest. That frightened me, and confused me at the same time.
It was silent for less than 3 seconds when it stopped, and then, all of a sudden, the footsteps started coming my way.
When I heard the clearly bipedal footsteps, and you could hear the amount of weight dropping with each step, I got extremely confused. In my head, a wild bear just turned into a basketball player, but I figured it was still just a bear, a bear on its hind legs.
That was a mistake, and one I thought I would pay for dearly.
It started approaching my campsite, again, near where the edge of my tent was.
I was feeling real uncomfortable all of a sudden and I found myself yelling out “stop!”
The noise quickly stopped, then after a few seconds, and to my amazement, it started again towards me.
The footfalls, which blatantly sounded like a 500-pound person, came very close, so I made my second verbal warning;
“Please tell me who you are, I have a gun and I will shoot!”
Again, when it heard my voice it stopped but, just after I stopped talking, it kept walking and basically walked into my campsite no more than 10 feet from where I was sitting in my tent. Honestly, it could not have been more than 10 feet from my tent at that point.
At this point, I was trippin’ out to say the least.
I was so confused, and it would only get worse. I honestly thought I was dealing with a huge person who lived in the woods looking for trouble, or food, or both.
But, then how in the world did they just charge through the forest like that in the pitch dark?
It didn’t make sense, but here’s the reality: something well over 350 lbs plus, and on two feet that live’s in the forest, was standing not far from my tent, and it did not care about my verbal commands…, apparently.
I must tell you, I am trained to perform well under stressful situations, and I was trained by a hunter, but as soon as I heard two feet approaching, I felt a feeling of dread which I’ve never felt before or since.
I never knew what dread was until that night, and I’m not at all imagining things from stories, but it was like this thing was looking at me through the tent, I could feel it, and I felt I was in some serious danger, to say the least.
When I have my big guns, I’m not afraid of anything, but this was different. I felt like I was being hunted, and honestly, it made me very frightened, scared, and even a bit mad of all things.
So, basically, I found myself holding my guns and trying to calm down my dog, but this animal-man, or whatever, hadn’t gone anywhere. I would say 5 minutes had passed where it just stood there close by.
You might ask how I know this, well, it’s because in the pitch black you can hear every little noise, and if something is 400 lbs or more, trust me, you could hear nearly every step.
But, it was just standing there I believe. After about 5 minutes, I wasn’t sure if it left quietly finally, so I spoke up.
Again, I said, “What do you want? I’m going to start shooting.” After I yelled, I could hear him jump or hide nearby, but, still, he remained in my camp.
Then, a minute later, he would take a couple steps closer, and do nothing. I felt like it was teasing me, almost. Maybe testing me would be a better take on its behavior at that point.
After this went on for about 10 minutes, the animal-man-thing standing in between me and my car, obviously watching the tent, was trying to either force me out of my camp or, hunt me, and my dog.
Most likely, however, it was trying to observe or possibly steal food.
It was apparent to me, though, that this thing, which I believe was a male because of the way he was challenging me, wanted me out, and had me cornered.
But, I’m not one to back down from a fight, even if it meant my life.
Finally, after I realized time was passing and this dude-creature-thing wasn’t leaving, my anger really overcame my fear and I literally told myself that whatever was out there, it was hunting or taunting me, and if I want to survive the night, I would have to fight.
At this point, I heard this huge thing inching towards my tent, and it was at that point that I began to hear things from multiple directions.
Multiple Bigfoot in my camp…
I remember thinking I only heard the one, then I realized the distraction technique where a male will make way more noise than necessary, all the while, another male, or female, move in quietly for the kill!
I had no idea what I was dealing with. I didn’t want to look outside the tent, but I figured I had to at that point.
I unzipped the tent and stuck my head out, I heard the thing do its quick jump and hide move, but, again, it was pitch black and my flashlight wasn’t helping.
My big mag light was out in the car, and I only had a little mag light, but in a situation like this, I didn’t want to use a light because I could see in the dark pretty well because of the bright moonlight.
But, frustrated and feeling very threatened, I sat with my tent door open, and again, moments later, I heard the thing emerge from wherever it was near the edge of my campsite.
I have to say, I was feeling at the mercy of this thing, so I busted off 5-6 shots from the 9mm, just into a close treeline, and I think I might have yelled as well.
I felt good for about a minute or so hearing nothing but the silence of the night. Then, a minute later, sure enough, after I was in the tent, I heard a few footsteps, again.
This really scared me now, because basically, I realized and asked myself; “what walks on two feet, is huge, and doesn’t care about gunshots and yelling lives around here?”
I couldn’t think of anything, not even Bigfoot at the moment because in that moment you are trying to rationalize, and I didn’t think Sasquatch existed anyways.
Not long after my warning shots, I was just sitting in my tent listening to this thing for over an hour now, and I still didn’t know what to do. There was a lot of noises that night, some that are common but, there were so many unknown noises that I eventually stopped listening, it was too much.
There were a lot of noises earlier that night, some that are common but, there were so many unknown noises that I eventually stopped listening, it was too much.
I was at least becoming content sitting in my protective tent after a while until all of sudden, this thing started to approach my tent again. Why? I mean seriously, I thought about it for a minute and realized the food was across from my tent and could have easily been taken instead of bugging me by that point.
When I heard it approach, and it walked again within 15 feet of my tent, I pumped the shotgun and had it pointed in the general direction of this thing, ready to blow some holes in my own tent if I had to.
I started yelling in anger after really feeling bullied by this thing at that moment.
I yelled aggressively for a few seconds, then collected myself and decided that was enough, I was going to go confront him, it, whatever. I gave a verbal warning I was coming out with my shotgun and told this thing I would be shooting, only silence followed.
I sat quietly for maybe one minute and told myself either he will get me or, I’m gonna get him. I jumped out of my tent and looked his way and immediately saw something that looked like a large hairy man in the dark run from near a bush to a group of trees.
I didn’t wait and I don’t care what you think, I started shooting at it. Not really to kill, but I was shooting to show this thing I’m not someone to mess with.
I thought it was gone after that but, as I was getting back into my tent, I remembered the noises I heard from the other direction kept coming.
All I did at that point was to start yelling bad words into the air and fired one more shot into the ground.
Part of the reason I was letting shots go was to attempt for someone to hear my shots, hopefully, and come to me, but I was out there, alone, and nobody came, nor were they coming.
I sat there and had a cigarette in the open while thinking I had fixed the problem with the gun shots and yelling, yet, I was still trying to understand what was happening.
At this point, I thought about leaving which would have taken a long time anyways, and if my car got stuck I was done.
By this time it was 1 or 2 in the morning, I was amazed by how the hours went by when I was in fight or flight mode. I got back into my tent, however, hoping this was done, and it couldn’t have pissed me off more to hear this big ole’ thing emerge from the brush just a minute later.
I thought to myself that I can’t keep doing this all night, but I really felt it was life or death.
The next hour or so was spent sitting and trying to calm my dog down and keep her quiet, yet, all the while, two of these things were not far from my tent, and now they were communicating back and forth.
I was sitting there basically waiting for one or both to get too close to my small tent, and I was planning on letting loose again with the shots to protect myself and my dog’s life.
However, unlike my normal behavior, I had drifted into a hypnotic sleep and did not wake up t morning, all the while still sitting upwards, and holding my gun.
Morning baby, how was your sleep?
I’m an insomniac and can’t believe I fell asleep, it was either the huge amount of stress I was in, or you can make assumptions, but I got up quick when I woke and checked things out immediately.
Honestly, while still feeling like something was watching me, I started looking for evidence, like footprints, or food missing.
I found nothing, which messed with my mind a bit actually. No food missing, no animal prints, no poop, but the thing I did notice were two places where branches were snapped in two spots for looking at me from a hidden place with room to run away quickly in the brush nearby the edge of the campsite.
And, finally, the feelings of dread were gone, and I felt good, I felt safer.
As I felt like I had earned or won my camp site back, I packed up the car, but I didn’t want to leave right away. I wasn’t staying another night for sure, but I had just got there, made dinner, got in my tent then got scared for 8 hours straight.
Before I would run off with my tail between my legs, I was going to let the dog run around for a bit, and just relax for a few first. I was armed, and it was daytime, I felt safe.
Plus, the daytime is my time, I wanted to see whatever, or whoever was hunting me, which there’s no other way to explain what these things wanted with me.
My dog is a pit bull, so she’s amazing at telling me what she can sense, and she usually stays near me. About 5 minutes into our walk, my dog was busy moving forward, but very cautiously I noticed. That is when I realized and heard something literally stalking us.
I really assumed this was a Bigfoot, and at this point, I was fed up with this bully of a forest giant if that is what it really was.
Every time I would move quickly and then come to a fast stop, I could hear something behind me stop. I would walk, I would hear this thing walk. This brought me back to the night before with all the fear, and anger once again.
I needed to get the heck out of there, but I was so angry and tired of being scared and confused, plus I haven’t mentioned this but, I am very protective about my puppy, and at this point it sure seemed like her being in heat attracted some type of large predator, and it was not going to get her at some point if we didn’t leave!
Anyways, I got my dogs attention and started to run with her back towards camp, but a few strides into it I abruptly stopped, loaded my Glock, turned towards the direction of this thing, and let off a few shots again. The gunshots didn’t do a thing, but this stalker sure moved fast when it realized I was not afraid to stop and face it.
I did not get a daytime sighting, but I did see something the size of large person on two legs running away from me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a solid view. But, the sound it made bolting away from me through the woods was the same exact sound I heard the night before when all this started.
At that point, we ran back to camp.
That night is burned into my memory and affected me in many ways, including traumatizing my pit bull puppy. At the time of firing shots, it was no less than warning shots and protecting myself from an animal hunting me and my dog.
I don’t care if you’re mad I shot at Bigfoot because if you were there, you would be begging me to do anything necessary to end the situation. And yes, I do believe what I heard, experienced, and briefly saw moving away was a Bigfoot.
There is no doubt in my mind it was a Bigfoot, and I don’t convince easily. I’ve always had an open mind, but I need evidence to be convinced.
I really didn’t tell anyone about this event, or think about this for years. Then, one day, I saw the Survuvorman Bigfoot Specials, and the things he was saying that are common for Sasquatch encounters, they brought me back that night and day.
I also heard some Bigfoot vocalizations online, and my heart dropped. I instantly knew exactly what I dealt with that night, and I have been researching it with a passion ever since.
There is more that happened but, what I have written are the things I can still re-live, not including the things I remember but can’t picture in my mind any longer. I really tried to forget about this whole event, even staying clear of the woods for a couple of years. I haven’t gone camping alone since…, and I won’t go alone again.
Well, that is my story, which is very true. It changed my life forever. I know it’s wild, that’s why I rarely tell people or use my real name. I have since then done extensive research and know that a gun is not a good way to fight off Bigfoot, but I would not take back my actions that night and morning, ever.
