Read by guest reader Mike S. – Thanks Mike for being part of the clan!
A few years ago, about 3-4 years before mine, there was a pretty chilling l report of Bigfoot stalking or following a man’s family near the Oregon Caves. Well, I think that thing roamed the whole area of the OC and the main Holland, Oregon area.
I’ve only told a few people about this experience, and the visual only lasted a few seconds or so, and I only saw this thing once. However, I had heard it plenty and knew it was stalking around our property for nearly a month on and off as there were tell-tale signs I will share here.
Here is what happened, and what I saw that made me a believer.
Thanks, Mike… Great Job!
The Bigfoot of the Oregon Caves!
I was 14 at the time when my folks and I started hearing and eventually had seen a Bigfoot on our property outside of Holland, Oregon.
It got so crazy there for a while that my mother would not let me run around the property like I used to, and when we moved a few years later, she was the happier for it, well, sort of. She was a worry wart I suppose, but she was also very interested in these things.
We did not feel bothered by it, my dad and I at least. Yes, it seemed to be a little antagonistic or just simply bothersome, but never did we feel like it wanted to kill or hurt us. I think what my father was thinking, it was curious and highly intelligent.
We lived outside of Holland, Oregon at the time as I said. My parents were well off from a product patent my dad had created years earlier, it is now a software still used.
We had never had anything strange happen before this, at least nothing ever happened that told us there was more than the passing bear, cougar, or coyote that came through here. That was until one late February.
The events happened over the period of a few weeks I remember. It was not until that last incident that we saw what it was, but the evidence between then and the sighting made it pretty self-evident, however.
Slap, tap, give a dog a bone.
That first night visit was really weird I have to say. Until the sighting, we’d attribute it to a Bigfoot, but only after a few experiences.
Of course, I guess you could say I did the whole time, but it had been laughed away by my parents.
I recall being in my bedroom at the time playing some video games the night of the evening of the first experience. No, I was not a video game “gamer” guy like some, but I enjoyed football and other sports games like Madden 10.
My mom and dad were out in the living room, at first at least.
It started out in the living room, not that I could hear what was going on at the moment, but eventually, it would make its way to my side of the house and right out my window.
My mom and dad were chatting I recall, and the chatting turned into complete quietness.
I sat there playing my game when I realized I was hearing nothing, that is when I turned down the sound and heard something weird.
It was as if something was dragging something hard against my bedroom wall, from the outside, of course. Like a large stick or, as my imagination would eventually get away with me, it sounded like a large fingernail dragging across the rough siding.
It stopped, and that is when we all heard a loud SLAP!
I heard my mom practically scream for a split second as the front door slammed shut. My dad had run outside rifle in hand. It was about 3-4 minutes later that he would come inside and tell us all was safe.
My father was an author of books about computers and tech, a software guy to be exact, so his ‘search and kill mode out here in the boonies’ was about as effective as Michael Jackson’s or that guy on Facebook.
Suffice it to say, however; he did know how to use a gun. When he returned, he gave it up to a person wondering around outside trying to scare us, maybe a teenager or two down the road trying to scare folks.
He did notice a couple two or three impressions in the hard frozen snow, but it was so frozen that it simply looked like impressions from a shoe at best, even I saw one the next morning and did not argue the fact.
After that, my mom settled down and walked around the house talking about how she was going to find that kid or person and give them a tongue lashing for scaring us like that.
Well, it was no person we would come to learn and trust me, I don’t think you’d want to yell at this thing.
The other strange thing we found was that our dog, who we were to pick up the next day from the vet, his bowl outside with the huge ham bone my mother put in there for him was gone, just up and gone. It was there earlier that afternoon, I would know, I sat it there.
But, of course, that too we thought could have simply been explained away as the result of an animal stealing.
Listen! Did you hear that?
I do not think these things are dangerous one bit, okay, maybe if you were threatening it, but I do not believe they are as dangerous as some say, and some from your stories here Dave.
Personally, I think this thing was simply curious was all as I mentioned before.
But, this thing, these things I gather as there is way more than one running around, can be rather intimidating and downright scary at times I am sure. Their size alone can be daunting to someone.
The next time we would notice anything unusual was by me when I was out near the back of the property. I was with a friend, and we were doing some target practice with our compound bows.
While my parents were not hunters or fans of hunting for that matter, I was, and they respected that fact. I received the bow for my birthday that same year, and my friend Tommy and I were out mastering the skill of archery.
The winter was almost over by this time and things were about to ramp up in the creepy and weird out here in Holland on our property.
I was taking a shot, and as I let it go, Tommy made me sin (meaning missing the target in archery) when he suddenly put his hand on my shoulder and said;
“Listen! Did you hear that?”
I did not know at first, but he swore he heard someone say something. I looked at him as if he was nuts for a second I remember, but then I heard it too, like a weird gibberish mumbling sound not to far away from us. Personally, I thought it was probably within 15-20 yards of us.
But, we heard it nonetheless and could not make out a word of it. About a few seconds or so after that, we heard it again from the same general direction. It seemed deep and raspy, but clear.
It was really weird, and my friend started telling me we should head back to the house. I did not want to go. I told him to get an arrow out of his quiver and lock one in; I did the same.
I stood there and whistled.
Nothing at first, but about 20 or so seconds after my whistle we heard one reply. A clear, crisp and loud whistle that seemed to now be coming from just in the treeline we could not see past.
Tommy was getting nervous at that point and wanted to leave, and now!
We backed out of there slowly, but before we hit the trail back to the house, we heard that strange gibberish talking again. Tommy ran all of a sudden and I followed, all the way back to the house.
That evening over dinner I told my mom and dad what we heard out there. My dad asked me what it sounded like and I did my best to mimic it.
He did not look all that confused or surprised about it. After I made the sound, as best I could, he looked right at my mother and said that is exactly what he heard the night before out their bedroom window.
My mom and he carried on the conversation about what it was, and that is when I first heard the words Bigfoot and Sasquatch used in my house.
They were both a little lighthearted about the possibility, but they were also finding themselves lacking any other idea of what it could be. I do know they knew more and had more experiences than I did, they both died a few years later in a car accident.
But, I won’t go there.
Anyways, they spent a lot of time after that keeping a pretty vigilant eye out for the forest visitor.
Whoops, and knocking.
We kept hearing things, even the same week of the incident with Tommy out on the property.
One night, about two nights after that day, I heard something tapping on the side of the house. Actually, it sounded like it was right outside my bedroom just tapping every few seconds.
I got up slowly and then as fast as I could open the shades. Unfortunately, we all know shades do not move or open as fast as just pulling back a curtain. Still, though, I caught the shadow of something huge run through the side yard and disappeared into the trees.
I ran and woke my folks up as quickly as I could, and I was excited, and a bit scared, to be honest.
I told them that I saw the silhouette of something that seems to be as tall as the gutters are off the ground, and it moved fast. It was dark out, but at least there was enough moonlight or ambient light to see the shadow that I was sure was, in fact, a Bigfoot.
Thought made me shutter and excited all at the same time.
We did not go outside as I said, we were all rather excited, but this possible Bigfoot was a wild animal we knew, and wild animals are just that, wild and unpredictable.
It was the next morning we would learn of its intelligence.
I found a pile of sticks near my window. They were pretty straight sticks, long too, about 20 inches in length. Personally, today, I believe it was leaving me a gift of arrows. There were 7 of them, and they were neatly stacked in a pile.
My parents were elated to know that it seemed as though the Bigfoot if that is what it was, seemed to be gifting us. This told them, or at least eased the tension a bit.
Still, they warned me about approaching anything out here, especially a Bigfoot.
Later that night we all decided to have a small bonfire in the backyard with cocoa. We stood out there until night came and that is when we heard knocking, like a bat on a tree it was pretty clear, and not that far away.
It would make three-four knocks, and then it stopped. This continued for about 45 minutes or so until we decided to head back inside.
That night I swear I heard a howl off in the night, it was far away it seemed, but I swear I heard it.
The Bigfoot of the caves.
The last time we would have any experience with this Bigfoot started with our dog, he was a must, not to big either, his head reached my knee. But, this would be a visual seen by all of us, and our best guess of what this thing was would be confirmed.
I do remember though, that my dad had a few conversations with some folks about Bigfoot in the area, and there was no lack of stories to go around he learned. He even heard from one individual who had seen one follow his family while visiting the Oregon Caves less than a decade earlier.
He was on the fence about; and I quote; “wildness” of these animals. Questions about how dangerous they could be were and seemed to be a big question weighing on his mind, not to mention my mother’s.
Of course, like anyone, the final answer for him was that they were a wild animal and that they, like any wild thing out here could be dangerous given the reason to be.
We still heard the sounds from time to time, and my dad even recorded some of them, unfortunately, after their deaths, I could not find the recorder. Personally, I think he took it out in the woods and dropped it off the day before the accident happened and it is still out there today, maybe.
But, I don’t want to talk about that.
It was nearly dark, but not completely, the sun was down, but there was some light left in the sky. It was a mostly clear that early evening I recall as well.
The dog was let out by my mother to do his duty, but he would not go through that door. At first, she said she thought he just did not need to go and it was cold outside. But, that was not the reason.
She kept trying to scoot him out with her foot when all of a sudden, that dog turned and nipped at her foot and growled as it ran off towards my room.
He was whimpering at that point, and that is when we all heard a loud holler, not quite a scream, but a holler of some kind.
The dog tore off under my bed, and I ran out to the living room where my dad was just getting to as well.. My mom immediately shut the door and locked it, just in case.
Again, another holler, this time it seemed like it was right out the back sliding glass door, at least in the backyard.
We all hurried over to my dad’s office that had a better view of the backyard. I was about to turn on the light out of habit, but he stopped me. We pulled the curtains back slowly, but nothing, we could not see a single thing out there.
Another holler and we were sure it was coming from the treeline that was no more than 30-yards from our back patio and the fire pit.
The outside street light finally flickered on from the side of the property, near the driveway. That helped a bit to illuminate the backyard, enough to see two green glints of eyeshine just inside the treeline.
It looked as though they were staring right back at us, and every few seconds or so they would disappear behind a tree, then come right back.
My dad braved opening the window slowly to have a chance to hear something. Boy did we!
That same gibberish Tommy and I heard that day was going on, and what got us the most excited was that for the first time, there was an answer from the east. There was multiple Bigfoot on the property at that point.
My dad made a whistle and immediately it was followed by a response, a whistle.
Suddenly, that howling or hollering came back. And personally, I remember it sounded more like a howl than a holler once we heard it better through the open window.
As the howl subsided my dad said “look” in an intense manner, and that is when this thing walked out into the light and backed off into the woods.
It was huge, so huge its body blocked out some of the trees behind it. It was hairy or covered in fur; today I believe it was hair looking back, it was long and, well, stringy.
We could not get a clear face on this thing, but you could tell there was no neck to speak of it seemed. It was as if the head just grew out of its massive shoulders. And the browline was thick, or heavy.
The head was slightly conical, not too pointed, but conical I would say.
Its arms dangled past its knees, and you could see long fingers, and I mean long. It turned its body all of a sudden and let out a howl that practically shattered my eardrums. The whole conversation I hear today about infrasound does make sense; you could feel the vibration and tone.
It stopped, turned its upper body to look back at us and it was gone in one graceful stride.
It was dark, so getting a great visual was not possible, but it was good enough to see this was not a person, but a Bigfoot!
Back to, well, normal.
I do not share the encounter and experience much; it brings up a lot of memories of my parents, I guess that is why I have not done the interview circuit, ever. I prefer it that way I suppose.
But, it was a crazy time, a fun time, and a scary little time here and there for us. But, that is our story…
